What we know about addiction is evolving, and the more we learn, the more we realize we have yet to learn. One thing we know for sure is that addiction resides in the brain. I’ve often thought addiction would be easier to deal with if it made its home in the human elbow or perhaps the clavicle or kneecap. Alas, addiction exists in the most complex and complicated human organ of all—the one responsible for our perception, processing, reasoning, placement of relative value, dreams, ambitions, feelings, subconscious functions, and all aspects of our consciousness of ourselves and the world around us. Addiction, we are learning, has the ability to hijack every part of the brain and bend it to serve the addiction. It can take over what you see, feel, think, and value, and at the same time muffles your ability to perceive that it is hacking each of those parts of you. Addiction is the ultimate double-blind con, pulled off with all the savvy of a double cross in a Cold War spy movie. Addiction is the ultimate ninja, able to sneak in right under your nose and take everything you care about without you ever realizing it was even there.
